Noise coordination research
ANIMA has undertaken the European coordination of aviation noise research, complemented by the research on noise impact understanding. Through the gatherings of stakeholders, a strategic roadmap has been developed, which addresses different aspects of noise problems that would help to improve research efficiency in each area.
ANIMA elaborated a joint strategic research roadmap for aviation noise reduction to enhance coherence and efficiency of noise research in Europe, ensuring and reinforcing coordination between national, international and EU research activities.
This action has been built on the pre-existing research network on aircraft noise (X-Noise) and by enhancing the Common Strategic Research Roadmap for aviation noise reduction with reinforced considerations on impact (i.e. impact-led noise reduction research roadmap).
To support this activity, the European Aviation Noise Research Network has been established. It coordinates the European scientific and technical community. The feedback received from three divided committees is used to update the roadmaps accordingly.

Roadmap research & National programmes
In economically advanced countries, the research is monitored through several sets of roadmaps. For instance, aircraft or engine manufacturers have technological roadmaps providing information on past achievements and expected steps forward. Most of the time, these technical roadmaps are expressed in Technological Readiness Levels (TRL), a scale intending to measure progress from the first laboratory research to the final commercialisation of products or concepts.
Some countries do their best to coordinate their stakeholders' efforts – manufacturers, research and technologies organisations, small & medium enterprises or universities – through national programmes. These programmes must not be seen as rigid organisations, firstly because each of the aforementioned bodies may have its priorities and secondly because the process must leave a certain amount of creativity for the sake of efficiency. However, research agencies' mutual exchanges between experts and financial incitements help fill the gaps between needs and achievements on noise technologies.
ANIMA is mapping aviation noise research in each EU country through National Focal Points. Together, they are the members of the X-Noise Aviation Noise Research network, contribute to the research roadmaps, support the broader perspective of the state-of-the-art and receive feedback about the future needs from the end-users.
