Outcomes of the 23rd Workshop of the Aeroacoustics Specialists Committee of the CEAS

October 8, 2019

In conjunction with the ANIMA meetings, the 23rd workshop of the Aeroacoustics Specialists Committee of the CEAS took place. This year, the workshop focused on innovative active and passive materials for the reduction of noise in aeroacoustics applications. The primary goal of the workshop was to encourage the discussion and the cooperation of the research community on this key topic, aiming at the identification of breakthrough concepts to achieve the substantial noise reduction required to guarantee the sustainable development of the aeronautical transportation system. Once collected, the presentations from the workshop will be made available on the ANIMA website.

Reinforcing coordination between national, international and European research activities

Reinforcing coordination between national, international and European research activities

October 8, 2019

The ANIMA project includes a dedicated working group which focuses on enhancing coherence and efficiency of aviation noise research in Europe. The project supports the coordination of national, European and international research efforts. On the occasion of the Aviation Noise Research Network Meeting, experts had the opportunity to showcase aviation noise research initiatives. The ANIMA project is further developing the network of national focal points in this sense, facilitating cooperation and exchange of best practices. National focal points from Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, Ukraine, Switzerland and Serbia offered insights on what they are doing in their countries: Umberto Iemma, from the Roma Tre University, explained that the university set up through internal resources a number of projects on topics, such as the multidisciplinary modelling of next generation aeroengines, including technological and operational uncertainties. Lars Enghardt, from the German Aerospace Centre, presented a selection of the numerous projects funded by the Federal Research Programme Aeronautics LuFo, such as AGATA. Hervé Lissek, from the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, introduced several national project held either by his own entity, by the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule of Zürich (ETH Zürich) or by the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science (EMPA), especially on liners […]

The ANIMA project has reached the halfway point, with numerous results materialising. The project partners have finished assessing noise management practices by carrying out: A survey of regulations implementation and guidance across European Airports An in-depth study on the concept of annoyance and critical analysis of past interventions to lower it A critical review of noise metrics and of their usage for communication and engagement A critical review of the health impact of aviation noise beyond the WHO report A review of the policies and practices in other noise-affected sectors and their potential application to aviation. Additionally, ANIMA has also been carrying out research on annoyance and quality of life. The following has been performed: A review of indicators used to define quality of life A review of methods to engage with communities in order to test the impact of a communication campaign A review of methodologies for noise-induced awakening and derivation of indicators for night noise protection zones development of AnimaApp, which is a mobile application to capture people’s reactions and responses to aviation noise; The results are available on the ANIMA website along with user-friendly summaries. Coming Up Other important work discussed and carried out refers to the […]
